One winter day a Zuni maiden was returning back from picking up wood she heard riders approaching fast. It was the Navajo on the way to raid her village by the time she reach her village, it lay in ruins and many were dead, and some were still fighting a Navajo warrior seeing how beautiful she was he threw her across his lap and took her back to his village to take her as a second wife. His first wife didn't want him to have a second wife, more beautiful than she for fear she would lose his love. Late that night as the warrior slept his wife gathered food. Water and blankets to send the maiden on her way.
The Maiden ran into the night until she came to a high mesa. She feared someone may have followed but she was safe she rolled up into the blanket and fell asleep. The next morning she headed toward home, all day she ran, when evening came she fell exhausted and cold to the ground for she had no food or water, she only had the blanket to keep her warm, so she wrapped up again and fell asleep. The night brought a heavy snow fall and it got very cold, being so exhausted she slept shivering inside. A patter of paws come up to the sleeping maiden, sharp white teeth gleamed out of a furry jaw. Silver-blue eyes turned up to the great spirit and called out a blood curdling howl to the moon, The Zuni maiden woke and tried to run away but couldn't she was half frozen, when she cried out in horror the white wolf loped away.
As the maiden starred up at the night sky she prayed to Great Spirit to protect her. In the distance she head the loud growl of the wolf and death echoing through the silent night. Soon she fell into a deep sleep almost as she were dead, the white wolf was illuminated by the moon as he drug his still warm kill to the freezing maiden and covered her body with it. He then chewed off a leg and laid it by her head and disappeared into the night.
The next morning after cooking the meat and eating she felt stronger. The night had added new life to her body. She wrapped up in the blanket now warm and full and continued on her way. She traveled all day and into the night, until she could go no more. Then wrapped up again and fell asleep. Out of the night came the white wolf once more. This time he curled up beside her keeping her warm and finally realizing he was a friend. When he woke up he caught her something to eat and they continued on their way together, side by side.
The friends traveled four days this way. On the 5th day the wolf woke the maiden and in the distance was her village. As she ran the rest of the way to her village the white wolf ran beside her. As they got closer the warriors keeping guard, raised their weapons to kill the wolf thinking he was going to hurt her, “No, No!” she cried. “This wolf saved my life he helped me get warm he hunted food and he brought me home you must never hurt the white wolves again.” He sensed danger and the wolf ran into the woods. The Zuni people took her home where all her family had died in the raid, the warrior she was betrothed (White wolf) had been injured in the battle and had died 3 days later. She had come home to a house of death and an empty future, the Zuni Tribe thinking she betrayed them would have little to do with her. Although the house was home and food was sometimes giving to her she lived out her life alone. Time brought age and age brought weakness, it was time to leave the village and go to the place of death. She could not walk and the people of the village would not help her, so she crawled out of the village and up the hill at the top, she turned her head to look back at them her eyes held strength. In the distance a blood curdling howl reverberated across the land. When she heard it she let out an answering howl of freedom. Seeing her white mate in the distance, her eyes turned silver-blue and her body turned into a white wolf. She then loped away to freedom. Her white wolf mate had finally come to claim her.
